George, the older cat with one fang, finds his forever family
George, about eight years old, arrived at the Brisbane Rehoming Centre after his owner's job changed. He was recovering from cat flu, had an injured paw (he used to reach it through the cage to say hello), and was missing a fang, which gave him a charmingly lopsided look.
A family offered him a one-week trial, and by the end of it there was no question: George was staying. His wound healed, his flu cleared up, and he now sits in his front yard greeting the neighbourhood dog walkers as they pass. Everyone is delighted, and at least one dog is probably very confused.
Socko the rescue cat becomes an adventure buddy
Socko's person used positive reinforcement training: tiny treats and lots of praise for the behaviours they wanted. Socko picked up plenty of tricks and now heads out on adventures with a harness and lead. His person was so inspired that they went on to start what they describe as Australia's first cat walking and training community. Proof that cats can be great explorers too.

Chill Wag tip of the fortnight
If a new pet is joining your home, give them a quiet spot, a comfy bed and plenty of time to settle. A lick mat with a little pet-safe spread is a lovely way to help a dog (or cat) enjoy a calm moment, and short, positive training sessions work well for cats too. If you have any worries about your pet's health, check in with your vet.
